One of our core beliefs at Abide is to be stewards of the environment and promote the benefits of living in co-operation with the land. Growing cannabis outdoors is by far the most environmentally friendly way to grow. Cannabis is naturally hardy and resistant to pests, it thrives outdoors under the sun, producing higher and more complex terpene profiles than indoor cannabis. In the context of the climate crisis, it doesn’t require the enormous energy inputs (so often fossil fuel based) that are required when growing cannabis indoors or even in a greenhouse.
We grow our cannabis orchard style at our 15 acre licenced facility nestled into our 400 acre farm in the beautiful Trent Hills. We have been organically certified since 2022 and are committed to the practice of regenerative agriculture. We employ nitrogen fixing cover crops such as clover and alfalfa and practice no or minimal till planting which combined with composting helps to maintain and build nourishing living soil.
We have been collaborating with researchers at McGill University since 2023 developing and testing new microbial strains which are effective on Cannabis. This is part of developing a more sustainable production approach as we now understand that any plant is generally accompanied with a substantial, complex and carefully orchestrated population of microbes, the phytomicrobiome. We are collecting plant associated microbes from cannabis plants, and also from other crop plants and undomesticated plants, and screening these for a range of plant growth promoting and anti-pathogen activities.
